When attempting to install an application from Freespire 2.08 a cnr client upgrade screen appears. A question asked to download an upgrade with 2 choices. I select the Freespire choice and it shows the upgrade was successful. Still not able to install. When selecting any install the cnr upgrade page appears saying the upgrade is needed when it has already been installed. Is there something I am missing?

What version of the CNR Client is installed on your machine (from the console: apt-cache policy cnr-client)? The latest build is 0.2.3799 and can be found here...

Unfortunately the "new" client that was posted on October 16th, 2008 has an expiration date of May 6th, 1995. I have e-mailed the webmaster. (webmaster at cnr dot com) with no response. If you want to check it yourself run Sun Java 6 Web Start (in the internet folder of the run programs list). And a window for the Java cache viewer will pop-up, and you should see what I am talking about. Please e-mail the webmaster if you are having this problem I figure if enough of us e-mail him with the information the webmaster may actually do something.

Java shouldn't be required to download the latest CNR Client...

I have gotten the error message before that I need Java 1.5 or higher to upgrade my CNR client, because the site didn't recognize Java on my Freespire system. Additionally the CNR client shows up as a Jar (Java archive) file. It is still possible I am wrong and I have heard nothing back from the webmaster. If anyone knows another way to check expiration date on the CNR client I would be happy to hear it.

I think you have some other issue with your system.

The download is a deb file, not a jar

If you're referring to the Upgrade tool, I wouldn't recommend relying on that, but downloading the latest CNR Client should resolve your issues...

Thank you for the hyperlink for downloading the .deb file. This next question may sound stupid, but how do I install it?

Generically:
dpkg -i <some_app_name_here>.deb
i.e. from the console:
sudo dpkg -i cnr*.deb
or more specifically
sudo dpkg -i cnr-client_0.2.3799-0cnr1~feistyskipjack1_i386.deb
Hope this resolves your issues...

No, S3Indiana, it didn't work, dependency problems. CNR-client has libssl-dev dependency, and libssl-dev has a zlib-dev dependency. after installing zlib-dev and then using the dpkg -i command to install libssl-dev I got an error message that I needed to configure zlib and I'm stuck. At this point I am giving the new Ubuntu 8.0.4 LTS a try.

As a brand new FreeSpire (never used Linux products before) user, the whole environment is a foreign language to me. I have no clue what your answer to Allen means. In plain English, how do I install the newly downloaded CNR? For that matter, how do I instll anything? Is there a FreeSpire for Dummies book anywhere?

Unfortunately many within the online linux community tend to talk geekspeak to newbies, making it hard for anyone to really learn. However if you talk face to face with a linux enthusiast there is ussually in my experience a much friendlier sharing of inforation. The CNR client comes with freespire unfortunately it is also sporadic. For someone migrating from windows I would recommend Kubuntu (KDE version of Ubuntu) and if you want the codecs (compression decompression routines) for Flash video or Windows Video, simply go to the applications pulldown menu, click on add/remove software at the bottom of the pulldown menu, then near the top of the window in the middle there is a pulldown menu select "all available applications", then in the search bar to the right of that enter Kubuntu-restricted-extras and finally click 'Apply changes' button near the bottom right corner. And you can search for codecs to install packages you want click on the selection box for the package and click apply changes , to remove software you click on the box for the INSTALLED software and click apply changes.

P.S. There are about 14,000 packes available this way and the search box makes it a lot easier.

Alan et al

The upgrade issue, and sevral others, were solved when I downloaded and installed FreeSpire 2.0.8. CNR is working up to speed, and Open Office.org products have been upgraded and work as well. So, if you are using FreeSpire 2.0.0, I recommend an upgrade ASAP.
