CNR Failure

I have an IBM
Thinkpad T42. For years I've worked with Windows and recenty have
wanted to try Linux. I've tried many distros and none of them will
properly load and recognize the wireless card in this laptop. When I
read thatFreespire had solved this problem with their latest distro I
could hardly wait to burn an iso and load it up. Wouldn't you know, the
wireless worked first try. I was amazed. I thought I was on my way to
conversion. Then it happened. CNR will not work as it should. I've done
everything that everyone else here has tried. I thought I could benefit
from those ahead of me with the same problems. Well, it looks like we
all still have the same problem. I have the latest version of Freespire
and the latest download and upgrade of CNR. However, it will not
initialize and download and install anything. In snooping around I see
several files in the temp directory. I assume that something may be
downloading there. When I start the browser and go to Preferences to
change the assosiation for CNR, CNR is no where to be found. I've
loaded and reloaded Freespire several times and have the same problems
each time.

Obviously either I'm doing something wrong or there is a bug. I am
new to linux and Freespire but not computers. I've been working with
them very closely since about 1984. So this is very frustrating to me.
I have enjoyed working with linux and particularly Freespire, but I
can't continue to punish myself day in and day out. I'd like nothing
more than to leave MS behind and venture into new things, but.....

I do a lot of desktop publishing and need to install Scribus to start with. Any help would be most appreciated.

Which version of Freespire? Which browser are you using?

Sorry I haven't gotten back sooner but I've been down and out with a bug. I did not even touch the computer yesterday and just this afternoon got on to check some email. Here is a brief history of what I have tried to do to date.

I installed Freespire version 0.2.22.01

I'm using Foxfire versin 2.0.0.4 as my browser. It was the default on Freespire.

I started CNR from the icon on the desktop. It initialized and synced and started CNR.com and then went to the update page telling me to upgrade to the newest CNR Client. I did so. When this completed I then attempted to install Scribus. CNR failed to initialize at this point.

I verified my CNR Client using apt-cache policy cnr client and got the following response

Installed: 0.2.3201

Candidate: 0.2.3201

Version table:

      • 0.2.3201 0

100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I also tried the process of exiting CNR from the tray and then going into Computer and deleting the packages & the file -var-cache-cnr-client-dist-linspire-arch-binary-i3860packages

When I restarted CNR again from the tray it does nothing. The client starts but there is nothing there.

I checked the /tmp directory and there are several items there so I am assuming CNR is downloading there instead of where it is supposed to.

However, when I start Foxfire and go to Preferences to change the file allocations there is nothing listed for CNR at all.

Any suggestion? I'd love to get this thing up and working the way it should.

Thanks,

HSmith

I downloaded Freespire version 2.08 and it appears to have taken care of all of my problems. Perhaps this is the version that should be downloaded from all sites. Then you would have far less questions to answer. Thanks for your assistance and hope we meet again soon, but with no problems.
