When I try to install Kino from CNR, it looks like it is starting to install, but then it says "Installation Failed" with an explanation "This software could not be found on this server."

Sorry, strange, just installed the package prior to making the post. Pls. try the following:
Right-click the green CNR icon in the system tray, then select: Exit
Open Computer, browse to /var/lib/cnr/client delete: packages
& /var/cache/cnr/client/lists delete: _var_cache_cnr_client_dists_linspire_arch_binary-i386_Packages
Restart CNR
Then attempt the install again...

Ok, I did all that, and it didn't work. Same behavior.

However, I have new information: It gets worse. It looks like I can't install ANY package, not just Kino. Also, I can't uninstall anything, either.

Now here is some additional information that might have some bearing on this. Playing around with DVD authoring programs, I ran into one that appeared to depend on mjpegtools. I couldn't find that in CNR, so I just downloaded the rpm from the SourceForge page and used alien to install it. Edit for clarification: This use of alient to install mjpeg tools happened before the CNR troubles began (I was able to install and uninstall packages immediately after doing this, and in fact did so).

A while later CNR showed mjpegtools under the category that has updates available. When launching CNR, it prompted me whether I wanted to update that package. When I said yes, it went through some gyrations but then said the update failed. At some point now after discovering this install/uninstall problem, I decided maybe that mjpegtools package was the source of the trouble, so I attempted to uninstall it. First I tried to do with with CNR, but it wouldn't let me: just got the same error (that's when I discovered I can't uninstall anything either). So I went to the command line and tried to get rid of it with dpkg. Well, dpkg refused to do it saying that there were two programs that depended on it: qdvdauthor and dvd-slideshow (those were not the packages that I installed mjpegtools for; the one I thought I needed it for was KMediaFactory, which turned out to be a dud, so I had previously successfully uninstalled it). However, the wierd thing is that mjpegtools then disappeared from the listings in CNR, even though the utilities associated with the package still seemed to be there (they ran when I invoked them from the command line).

Well, then I tried to uninstall qdvdauthor and dvd-slideshow using dpkg. That worked. Then I attempted to uninstall mjpegtools again using dpkg. That worked. But CNR still doesn't work; still won't install or uninstall.

(Now I don't have qdvdauthor, which I've now decided is the one I want to use for that purpose, but now I can't install it--or anything else for that matter--with CNR anymore :( ).

Start the CNR client from a terminal with the command: cnr

Any errors should be text output in the terminal. This should give you an idea of what exactly the problem is, so it can be corrected.

Hm. I wonder if it was my failed attempt to install dvdstyler from a deb file that gummed up the works. Looks like every time I try to install something, its still trying to install dvdstyler.

Now, how to clear that out? .....

Ok, that was it. I had assumed when I used dpkg to install the dvdstyler deb file that when it couldn't resolve the dependencies, that it just was an unsuccessful install and that was the end of it. But apparently it had partially installed, and every time apt-get ran it kept trying to install the unavailable dependencies for dvdstyler.

Using 'dpkg --purge dvdstyler' fixed the problem.

Thanks for the help! I don't think I would have figured it out without the tip to run cnr from the command line.

The command line is invaluable for all kinds of tasks. Troubleshooting is just one of them.
